The Palmer Award is named in honor of the Dr. James Palmer who established the Detox Unit at Binghamton General Hospital. On April 30, the Medical Staff bestowed the 2010 Palmer Award on Dr. Barbara Chaffee who was the first medical director of Addiction Services after Dr. Palmer retired. She was instrumental in introducing new evidence-based practices in the treatment of withdrawal. Her work led her to focus on the treatment of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis which often impact addiction patients. Dr. Chaffee retired from her primary care practice this year.
