The Joint Commission standards related to pain management are as follows: 1) Patients have the right to appropriate assessment and treatment of pain; 2) Pain is assessed in all patients; 3) Record the results of pain assessment in a way that facilitates regular reassessment and follow-up; 4) The patient is monitored during the post procedure period including pain intensity, duration, location, character, and response to treatment; 5) Patients are taught that pain management is an essential part of treatment; and 6) Discharge planning provides for continuing care based upon the patientís assessed needs at the time of discharge.

At UHS, nursing will obtain a pain level with all routine vital signs and contact the physician if pain intervention is ineffective.
