Care Management has been leading an interdisciplinary team to decrease the patient length of stay (LOS) at UHS Wilson Medical Center and UHS Binghamton General Hospital.
Why decrease length of stay? Length of stay is a key metric for quality, evidence-based care. Not only is UHS committed to leading practice and providing a high standard of care, but reimbursement is increasingly associated with quality and outcomes.
There is truth to the saying, “the longer they stay, the longer they stay.” Patients who stay in the hospital for longer periods of time are shown to have an increased risk of adverse events such as nosocomial infections, falls, and general physical de-conditioning.
In a contemporary healthcare environment, the hospital is for focused treatment and stabilization of acute conditions. Transition to other settings is the expected norm for healing, recovery, and chronic management.
