Patient Readmissions Under Review

Monday, January 31, 2011 at 9:58:50 AM

Efforts are on-going at UHS to review patient readmissions within 30 days and the factors which may lead to it. Medicare will be reducing reimbursement on these cases no matter what the cause, and Medicaid is expected to follow suit using different rules. The bulk of readmissions found for cardiac cases occur within the first 7 days and may or may not be related to the first admission. Often there are multiple issues at play, but clear discharge instructions and quick follow-up care with the primary physician can be most helpful in avoiding readmissions. Further information will be provided at the departmental level.
