HEMOGLOBIN A1C (A1C) CHANGES

Monday, February 14, 2011 at 11:49:53 AM

In response to the recommendations created and supported by the ADA (American Diabetes Association), the Chemistry Department at UHS Wilson Laboratory will be making the following changes to the Hemoglobin A1C (A1C) test:

1.)The new reference range will be reported as 4.0-5.6%

2.)The following criteria will be appended to the A1C test result

Increased risk for Diabetes……………5.7-6.4%

Diagnostic for Diabetes……> than or = to 6.5%

3.)An estimated average glucose (eAG) value will be calculated based on a patients A1C value, using the following calculation:

eAG = (28.7 x A1C) – 46.7

This value will be reported in mg/dL, with a reference range of 68-115 mg/dL, the eAG value equivalent to the A1C reference range.

The new range(s) and eAG values will be reported automatically with each Hemoglobin A1C test ordered and performed within the department, eliminating any need for a process change on the part of the ordering provider.

Any questions should be directed to the UHS Wilson Chemistry Supervisor, Angela K. Armato, MT, MBA at 763-5780
