Soft ID for Improved Patient Identification Proces

Friday, March 25, 2011 at 11:38:02 AM

The Laboratory is implementing Soft ID, a bar-code patient identification system to standardize the specimen collection process. The system will reduce errors in patient identification when laboratory specimens are drawn at the bedside. Patient wristbands will be scanned linking the patient name, date of birth, medical record number to a laboratory accession number unique to the patient and tests ordered. Specimen labels are printed at the bedside and placed on the tubes immediately in the presence of the patient. The labels are configured to be read by the instruments which process the specimens for the tests ordered, maintaining patient identification throughout the laboratory process from the time a specimen is obtained to the time the tests are resulted and reported to the provider.
