SWEAT TESTING CHANGES

Tuesday, July 05, 2011 at 3:38:18 PM

Effective July 6, 2011, the Chemistry Department at UHS Wilson Laboratory will be changing the reporting parameters with regards to sweat testing.

The Current reporting criterions are:

1.) Sweat Chloride testing is reported in units of meq/L of Chloride.

2.) Reporting range(s)are:

< 40 Normal

4060 Indeterminate

> 60 Positive for Cystic Fibrosis

3.) Results greater than (>) 160 meq/L of Chloride will not be reported

The New reporting Criteria will be:

1.) Sweat Chloride testing will be reported in units of mmol/L of Chloride

2.) New reporting range(s) will be:

Infant to 6 months of age:

< Or = 29 mmol/L CL [CF is very unlikely]

30 - 59 mmol/L CL [Indeterminate-CF is possible]

> Or = 60 mmol/L CL [CF is likely to be diagnosed]

Older than 6 months of age:

< Or = 39 mmol/L CL [CF is very unlikely]

40 - 59 mmol/L CL [Indeterminate-CF is possible]

> Or = 60 mmol/L CL [CF is likely to be diagnosed]

3.) Results less than (<) 10 mmol/L of Chloride will be reported as <10

Results greater than (>) 160 mmol/L of Chloride will still not be reported

These changes are being made in order to align the procedure more closely with regulatory requirements as well as current diagnostic information available.
