Change in Resident Work Hour Restrictions

The American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and New York state have changed the limits on the total working hours that a resident in training can do. Every teaching hospital in the United States is obligated to comply with these limitations.

Residents in training are now limited to a maximum work week of 80 hours; maximum shift of 16 hours for PGY1 and 24 consecutive hours for all other residents and fellows. Required time off is 24 hours/week; minimum hours off between shifts is 8 hours; and maximum ER shift is 12 hours. All residency programs must comply with these limits, and hospitals are audited to insure that they follow them.
