Update on Fecal Occult Blood Orders

Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 11:48:28 AM

Effective 5/1/12, UHS will change how fecal occult blood tests are ordered to meet Medicare guidelines. The order should be either for yearly colorectal or for diagnostic testing. Each will be offered as a set of three specimens or one single specimen.

The yearly colorectal screening (CPT 82270) is covered by Medicare at a frequency of once per 12 month period. (At least 11 months have passed following the month in which the last covered screening was performed).

The diagnostic fecal occult blood (CPT 82272) should be used to detect the presence of blood in the stool for any purpose other than screening. This test is included in the Medicare national coverage determinations coding policy. Therefore only certain diagnosis codes will cover testing. Please refer to the Medicare database at www.cms.gov.

Please call the UHS Laboratory Client Services Department at 763-5780 with any questions.
