UHS Hospitals Cardiac Ultrasound Labs are now requiring that all echocardiogram orders be accompanied by an “appropriate” indication.
Appropriateness Criteria for Transthoracic Echocardiography is available on the website
of both the American College of Cardiology (www.acc.org) and the American Society of Echocardiography (www.asecho.org).
The most common indications are:
1. Acute Coronary Syndrome
3. Cardiac Trauma
4. Chest Pain
8. Myocardial Ischemia/Infarction
9. Pericardial Disease
12. Pulmonary Hypertension
14. Valvular Heart Disease
