Emergency Medicine Guidelines for Chronic Pain

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 9:21:15 AM

The Emergency Rooms are piloting guidelines for use in dealing with chronic pain patients. When patients come to the Emergency Department with an acute medical condition where the ED practitioner feels it is appropriate, the physician will prescribe narcotics or sedating pain medication in a limited quantity and non-refillable. Non-narcotic pain medication only will be given to patients who have frequent ED visits due to chronic, on-going pain conditions. Prescriptions that have been lost, stolen or expired will not be refilled in the ED.
