On November 1, 2014 the Microbiology Laboratory began testing for human Metapneumovirus. Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a respiratory viral pathogen that causes a spectrum of illnesses ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe bronchiolitis, particularly in infants and young children. It can also affect adults and immunocompromised patients. The seasonal distribution of hMPV and RSV overlap creating a potential for dual infections to occur.

Testing for hMPV will be done on all Viral Respiratory Cultures and on all Inpatient/Nursing Home Influenza antigen cultures. Turnaround time will be 2-3 days.

Additional questions should be directed to the WMH Microbiology Department at 763-6528. Thank you.
