Viral Culture Changes

Virology Rapid Culture Update Effective May 14, 2007, the Microbiology department will offer rapid viral culture (CPT 87254 per virus) for the isolation of Herpes simplex, Varicella zoster and Cytomegalovirus. It will replace the conventional tube culture that takes up to 21 days to complete. Enterovirus rapid culture will be available in the near future and complete our transition to rapid culture. Rapid culture will only detect Adenovirus, CMV, Enterovirus, Herpes simplex, Influenza A and B, Parainfluenza 1,2, and 3, RSV and Varicella zoster. The best way to detect HSV and Enteroviruses in CSF is by PCR. Some Enteroviruses can be recovered by viral culture and will continue to be available upon request. If viruses other than those listed above are suspected, the laboratory will assist you in ordering the proper test for submission to our reference laboratory.
