Medical Versus Psychiatric Admissions

The Department of Psychiatry wants to remind physicians that a patient admitted to psychiatry who becomes medically unstable may need to be transferred to an acute care unit. The psychiatry unit is not equipped to care for serious medical issues. A patient who presents to the E.D. and meets the criteria for medical admission should go there with a psychiatry consult. There may be extreme cases, such as a patient on involuntary status, where a seriously ill patient needs to stay on psychiatry service. Special arrangements would be needed to accommodate the patient.
