Nothing is more important for the effectiveness of a microbiology culture result than a properly collected and transported specimen. If the specimen integrity is compromised, the microbiology laboratory cannot provide the information providers need to treat patients properly. In order to provide the best results for patients, specimens should be transported to the laboratory the same day of collection or within 24 hours of collection. Culture swabs and urines in transport media must be processed within 48 hours or they are unacceptable. Unacceptable specimens that fall outside of our specimen collection criteria, as outlined in the Laboratory Reference Manual, will not be processed.

United Health Services Hospitals provides transportation services for laboratory specimens. When the driver comes to your office, please make sure to give him all specimens. If you have a specimen collected after your scheduled pickup, please call the Transportation department at 763-6599/6712 to arrange transportation. If you do not reach someone directly, please call Laboratory Client Services at 763-5780, and they will assist you in arranging for transportation.

Please feel free to call Diane Madison, Supervisor, Microbiology department at 763-6869 with any questions. We are here to provide the best possible care to you and your patients.
