Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS)

Friday, January 23, 2009 at 1:54:01 PM

The Pediatrics Department is implementing a scoring system for pediatric patients at risk for cardio pulmonary problems. Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) is an 11 point scale for identifying hospitalized children who are at risk of imminent cardiac arrest and other code blue events. PEWS is calculated by examining critical measures such as heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and fluid therapy to insure early intervention.

The Pediatrics Department is also requiring PALS certification for all of their members in 2009. All of these measures will add to the safety of our pediatric patients.
