Beginning July 1, 2009, the internal blood bank procedure for blood crossmatch will change at UHS. This change will decrease the crossmatch time for patients who have already had an ABO type, Rh type, and antibody screen performed. For those patients not recently transfused and with a negative antibody screen within the previous 14 days, blood will be issued after an immediate spin crossmatch. This will eliminate the time of a Coomb’s phase incubation crossmatch. Blood will be available in 10-15 minutes for those patients with a negative antibody screen.
For patients with antibodies found by screen, a previous history of antibodies, and those not having a recent negative antibody screen, the time for completion of a crossmatch will not change (45-60 minutes).
This change in procedure will make the UHS crossmatch policy the same as those at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital and Syracuse area hospitals. If you have any questions about this change in procedure, please feel free to call transfusion services at 763-6153 or Dr. Peter Schotanus at 763-5257. Thank you.
